What is the Year 2000 problem?
The Year 2000 (Y2K) problem stems from a simple programming convention that has created a worldwide dilemma affecting computer systems, hardware, mainframes, real time clocks, software applications and embedded systems (chips). Six-digit date fields (MMDDYY) were universally used in programming computers, software applications, and hardware chips. This six-digit field, allowing only two digits for the year, is the basis for date-related calculations in most computer systems/programs today. The problem posed by this two-digit year date is that computers are unable to distinguish between the Year 2000 and the Year 1900. In fact, most computer systems will read the 00 as being 1900, or some date other than the Year 2000. Compounding this problem is that the Year 2000 is also a leap year (1900 was not), which, if not treated correctly, will result in numerous arithmetic and date related errors.
